On the island of Guam in July 1987 a very good friend of mine was raped and brutally murdered in her own home. Jennifer Mesa was 16 years old when her body was found by her father. According to local papers she was nearly decapitated. Locally, the thought was that this crime was committed by a prisoner on a work release program. However, to this day no arrests have been made in connection with the crime. Eleven years have passed and there has been no closure for her family and friends. This crime has an enormous impact to this day as Guam is a tranquil island paradise of approximately 150,000 people. I am currently a resident physician at Kansas University Medical Center but lived on Guam at the time of this murder because my father was military.
