During the summer of 1997 I worked at a care center. There was a woman, Pat, who had been there for about 11 years, though she was only 54 years old.. I was told that she had MS and had been plagued by cancer. She always had a smile on her face, even when she was taken to the hospital for chemotherapy. I always spoke to her when I saw her and of course she always had a friendly word or two for me. She had just recently learned that her cancer had returned and she only had about three months to live. One morning I awoke with a start and had a very strange feeling. I looked at the clock and it was 5:52 a.m. I had a dream that when I went to work the halls were empty, except for two women who were going into Pat's room. Minutes later Pat was walking down the hall towards me in a long, white, flowing robe. She was absolutely radiating. She was smiling and seemed to be gliding along, maybe a few inches off the floor. The two women, both African-American with traditional African dress on, were on either side of her. I remember thinking how peaceful Pat looked. I got up and got dressed and went to work at 7:30 a.m. When I got to the nurses station near Pat's room I saw her chart on the desk. Nothing clicked with me until I saw her husband standing in the hall talking to the charge nurse. Both of them were crying. When I asked the nurse what had happened she told me that Pat had died at 5:50 a.m. That was the exact time I was having my dream. When I told her husband that she had come to me in a dream, he put his arms around me and said 'She touched your life too, didn't she?' I have never had anything affect me so profoundly as that event. How it changed my life:I think I learned that life is so precious and we should always think of those less fortunate than we are.
