When I was around the age of 6 years old my family moved from Wilmington N.C. to Atkinson,N.C. a small town about forty miles Northwest of Wilmington. We rented a very large 2 story house about two blocks from my Grandmothers house. The house, as we later found, had a reputation of being haunted. The story goes that there had been a blind man living there with a lady who later became his lover. One day she moved out of the house leaving the man there alone. After a short while with out her there the man became depressed and shot himself with a pistol he had kept somewhere in the house. It remained empty for quite some time and then when ever a family or individual would establish residency in the house they would never stay for more than a month or so before leaving. There were stories and rumors but no one was ever really sure why no one would stay there. I remember the house well. It was a beautiful large home. White with blue trim, a fireplace in almost every room and classic wooden floors. I loved it from the moment we first saw it. My sister and I shared a room across the hall from our parents. It started immediately. I remember the first night I spent in that house. Everything seemed normal at first but then we started hearing these strange tapping sounds coming from the stairs leading up to the second story. Back and forth from one side to the other "tap...tap...tap..." Almost before the first week was up I began to get phisically sick every night in bed. It did not stop until the day we moved which was six months later. My older sister caught hell. I vomitted on her every night and every night my mother would have to come in there and clean us up. The doctors could find no reason for my illness and it was so bad that I even began to get sick outside of the house. One night a ball rolled out of the play room, around one corner of the bannister, around another and down the stairs where it rolled around another corner and came to rest beside our bed. I never really thought much of all of the things that happened in that house until after we moved out. We moved one block down from the house and we could still see it looming in the street light at night. I stopped getting sick but began having nightmates that were always centered around that house. Oneday my mother, brother and older sister were walking with me past the house when we all looked up and saw a man standing in the window. Almost as soon as we saw him, he vanished. Other families around the neighborhood confirmed seeing him there too but the house was still empty. We have long since moved away but I still see that house in my mind as clearly as I would if I were still standing there in the street looking at it. It is still there and still empty...I think I know why. How it changed my life:It certainly changed my feelings about haunted houses and apparitions and I am certainly am willing to listen with genuine interest when someone tells me of a similar experience
