Demon/Poltergeist/Haunting/Something Else? You Tell Me...(Part 2)

Well, I've found a few more minutes to tell you some more of what I remember. But, you know, I just wanted to say again that this is a true account of what happened. I sort of get the impression from the replies that maybe you all think that I'm just spinning a yarn for you. I even know that it sounds like I'm making it up--many others that I have related this tale to have told me that even though I'm a good story teller. But, actually even though I was once an English major (the legacy of which is acceptable spelling and grammar), I nonetheless am a very poor author. My attempts at writing stories were embarrassingly bad. Really cornball. This story only comes out sounding good because I'm not making it up. I'm only reporting to you what I remember. Oh, yeah--and thanks for the really kind replies. That's very encouraging, and it makes me want to tell you more. I would have been kind of crushed if you guys had all said that what I wrote was crap. Anyway, here goes the next part: When Vinnie returned home, about 1 A.M., I was still awake (how could I sleep?). Lee had tried to stay up with me, but finally he'd fallen asleep. Even out cold, Lee had proven to be a great comfort. While I was in his snoring presence, the frightening thing had remained at bay, much to my relief. I told Vinnie all that had happened, including the incident in the bedroom a few nights earlier. I needed to know what was up. He apologized for not warning me, explaining that he had hoped that I would be one of those people that wasn't bothered by the...whatever-it-was. Like Lee. He said that he'd been afraid to tell me the truth because he valued my friendship and was afraid of losing me. Some friends that had found out about this had gone away, just like Kim and Rob, never to return. Others just avoided him, like he had a contagious disease. "I lose more friends that way," he said. "OK, I can understand that," I told him, "But still, what's really going on here?" He admitted that he truly did not know. It was something that had been with the family since he was a kid. Vinnie said that he perceived the entity as being child-like, because it was usually playful with him. Various objects of his would be missing from the places that he left them, then reappear days later in other parts of the house. This was especially true of Bibles, crucifixes and rosaries. Sometimes the rosaries never came back. There was also the ouija board planchette (that's the little triangular thing that you put your hands on, when you ask the ouija questions) which Vinnie kept finding all over the house--like on a kitchen chair, or under the coffe table in the den, or under the nightstand by Vinnie's bed. To try and stop this annoyance, Vinnie had often tried to throw the planchette away, but no matter how often Vinnie did this, the planchette would always come back. Vinnie said that the entity would sometimes touch, or nudge him. On one occasion, he recalled standing in the kitchen, preparing a late-night snack. The thing (neither Vinnie or I ever did figure out exactly what to call it, although Vinnie did refer to it sometimes as "he") kept grabbing his hands and wrists. Finally, in frustration, he slammed down the silverware that he'd been using, and stormed out of the house. I just sat there, kind of dazed, listening to him talk. This was all so bizarre...But what about your parents, I asked him, how could a whole family live like this for all those years? He shrugged and said that his parents were never as bothered by the thing as he was. His mother told him once that she had heard whispering in the dark ever since they had moved into the house. The voices were never audible enough for her to make out what they were saying. She had found this unnerving at first, but over time she realized that whispering was all that was ever going to come of it. She decided that it was harmless. I was incredulous. "Why don't you have the house blessed?" I asked him. Half-jokingly he replied, "'Cause I don't want the roof to blow off." Then, his smile faded. "Look, my mom and dad don't want me telling people our house is haunted, or whatever. Besides, what if the blessing doesn't work, and it just got mad? My mom and dad would kick my behind, if we couldn't live here anymore." He reassured me that he would not leave me alone in the house anymore, and that as long as he was there with me, I didn't have to worry. Because I knew in my heart that my best friend would not lie to me, I took him at his word. I always trusted him implicitly. Nonetheless, I made it my business to not be in Vinnie's house alone anymore, and I tried very hard not to have to try to sleep there, whether he was home or not. As an aside--in honesty, I'm inserting this here because I cannot remember the actual point in time when I talked to Lee about this, but I do remember the conversation. As scared as I was to sleep in Vinnie's house, I could not fathom how Lee not only slept there, but was content to sleep there alone. I asked him, "Lee, man, how can you stand it here, like you do? I'd never spend the night here without Vinnie." Lee said, "It's very simple, Niki. I don't play with it. I don't aggravate it. Wherever it is, I go somewhere else. If it's here in the den, I go to the kitchen. If it's in the kitchen, I go to one of the bedrooms. I don't mess with it, and it don't mess with me." Well, that's pretty much all that I can write for now, 'cause it's getting late. I'll post more soon. Goodnight.

Date: 10/16/1999 9:37:00 AM  From Authorid: 1091    Wow! thanks for finishing the story! The first part was really exciting! So it was some kinda evil playful spirit following his family around for years maydbe you should ask Vinnie if a relative of his died in that house. Maybe it was a kid or something from his family that died there long before he was born.
