Complications arose and my doctor decided to perform an emergency C-section to deliver the baby. I said goodbye to my husband and they took me into the operating room. The next thing I knew I heard the anesthesiologist say "oh my god, we've got a problem." I don't remember coming out of my body - I just remember being above the scene watching the action. I was very calm and couldn't imagine why everyone was running around doing things to the ME that was still on the table. I saw a light in front of me and it was so wonderful I began "walking" toward it - you have to understand - I didn't actually have a body, just a soul, and I wasn't actually walking toward it but was being propelled toward it. A tunnel of "souls" formed around me as I got closer and closer to the blinding light. No one was "visible" in the tunnel - just percieved - its hard to explain. All of sudden my progression stopped and I was angry - I wanted to continue on. I was "told" (not in words, but in thought) that it wasn't time for me to come yet, that I must go back and finish the plans that had been made for me. I fought hard against going back, but it was like a magnetic pull away from the light. All of a sudden I was virtually slammed back into my body, and I heard the anestheiologist say, "I think we've got her back." Everything from there faded, and when I awoke, the first thing I did was try to tell my husband what had happened. This was before anyone had heard about "near death experiences" and he thought I was still loopy from the anesthetic. Later when my doctor and a nurse came in, I tried to tell them about it. My doctor exchanged a look with the nurse that said, "she's nuts." Then I told him what I had seen and heard before I went toward the light. It really shook him up to realize that I knew what had happened in the operating room, even though I was anesthetized and "dead" as well! He assured me I was dreaming, but he came back to my room late that night and pulled up a chair. "Tell me about your 'dream' again," he said. I told him it was too real to have been a dream and told him again what had happened. When I finished he thought about it awhile and finally confessed that he had heard of similar experiences from other patients and he believed that it was a phenomenon that happened when someone's heart stopped as mine had. He told me it was my mind's reaction to my body's trauma, and that the stories he heard were similar in many ways, yet different too. I felt better knowing that this had happened to others, but I didn't believe it was all in my mind. For one thing, that happened over twenty years ago and the memory is still vivid. I still have peace of mind about death and a reassurance that there is something after death. How it changed my life: I often wonder why I had to come back and what it was I needed to complete, and if I've done it yet. It gave me a peace of mind about life after death, and although I didn't see God, from that time on I have had no doubt that He exists.
