| Date: 10/7/1999 9:30:00 PM I was there last Friday Night. The light changes from white, to red, to green. I guess that was how a lantern used to be. If you go there they have a big billboard up that gives the details. I plan to take my kids there soon and will get back to you with any info I can.-B- |
| Date: 10/7/1999 9:33:00 PM One thing I forgot to say is, the light appears to "walk" up and down the train tracks. It is totally eerie! I seen it for myself and couldn't even begin to explain. It is totally cool. |

There is a simple explanation and I am going to place a complete description of it on my web site. It is not supernatural. Do you really want to destroy the mystery? The people that I stayed with when I figured it out, told me not to tell anyone. Apparently it is a tourist attraction and there is not much else up their that is unique. |
| Date: 10/10/1999 4:01:00 PM I was there 10-7-99 saw the lignt and have no idea what is causing it. Please lets all work on this, I have friends that are working on it. bigugly@tir.com |
| Date: 10/11/1999 4:47:00 AM Would someone please send my a picture of the poster that describes this site. When I was there 13 years ago it was not marked. A good view was from a dirt road off of rt. 45 and the light was seen looking north from there. Could someone tell me where the best site is now? Could someone email me at dpmartin@flash.net with pictures of light and the notice placed there and by whom it was placed. Do the locals know the cause but use it as a tourist attraction? A similar light in Texas has a web site and advertises which hotel to stay at and where to eat when you visit the "mystery". Is this the same deal in Paulding? |
| Date: 10/27/1999 2:54:00 PM How do I contact the individual who knows the answer to this mystry? I would also like to know the answer to "the Light" for I live only and hour south of the site. Please let me know. E-mail to (grtwlkngbear@yahoo.com) Thank you very much. |
| Date: 10/28/1999 8:16:00 PM To the man who knows the mystery of the light; I too would like to know what is causing the light to shine. I also live an hour south of the light, and have seen it many times. I have visited the light recently, and a very strange thing had happened. I would appreciate this information to help me with understanding this great mystery. Please contact me at scholzf@post.uwstout.edu |

I'd love to get some more information on the light for a speech I'm doing for my communications class... if anybody has useful information please email me at ingrid.steber@marquette.edu |
| Date: 11/8/1999 9:08:00 PM From Authorid: 1529 I remember watching the "unsolved Mystery" episode of this and some scientific explanation to this has to do with a natural gas leak of some sort near the swamps or marsh, and the temperture of the air surrounding the area which makes a phenominal sparks that creates the lighting affect. -Alex- |

To the guy who says he knows the mystery to the paulding lights. Ok, first how do you know? could you tell me my email is vic_350@hotmail.com and if any body has any pictures of this light I would be very happy to see them |
|
Date: 11/17/1999 11:27:00 AM
to alex: but this goes on all year even when the swamp is frozen...so how do you explain that? to the guy with the simple explanation: if its about car lights comming down rt 45..how do you explain that it never stays the same...sometimes it goes up real high and sometime it goes sideways..I took video tapes of this & I was holding my camera very still & sometimes it just went off the screen....if its not the car theory..I would like to know what it is...Patty |
| Date: 11/17/1999 4:38:00 PM i`ve just found out about the paulding lights from my sister last night. my sister and i plan on taking a trip together to go see them soon. if anyone could e-mail me some pic`s i would be very happy! oceanmice@aol.com thanks so much! |
| Date: 11/18/1999 1:47:00 PM I live in the area, and seen it chase a car down the dirt road. It turned bright red. |
| Date: 11/25/1999 6:27:00 PM I saw it last week. It looks an awful lot like car headlights and taillights. It seems that there's a road on the other side of this ravine and all you're seeing is other car lights. See this site for pictures similar to what I saw. http://www.tc.mtu.edu/~rong/LandOfCopper/Paulding_Lights/ |

I was just there a couple of days ago.my friends went alot closer to the light and they couldn't see it. we could clearly see it. This was my first time at the light. I'm from Madison WI and I totally didnt believe in "the light" but it's true! ag1419@hotmail.com |
| Date: 11/30/1999 8:29:00 AM It was very short, dull, and downright boring |
| Date: 12/3/1999 12:30:00 PM I too saw the light back in the spring of 1994. A bit of research at the local newspaper revealed that a workman on an old logging train was crushed between two cars. Story goes that the light is his lamp as he walks...looking for his head. Send any comments on Paulding Lights to bsherck@wghp.com |

As the President/GM of the Broadcasting Corporation that owns the two radio stations in the area of the Paulding Light, we get alot of comments from people coming to see the Paulding Light. Here are some of the most common questions. When can we see the Paulding Light? The Paulding Light can be seen at ANY time of the year, providing it is a clear night. The light appears spring, summer, winter, and fall. Although in the Upper Peninsula our winters usually run from July 8th to June of the following year. It is important that it be a clear night. The road that the Pauliding Light appears on, goes down into a creek bed, then up a hill. The light appears at the top of the hill, so any fog down by the creek, or even up on the hill will prevent you from seeing the light. Listen to Y101 or UP 105.7 for the weather, and when it is a clear night, go see the light. Does the Paulding Light come out at the same time each night? No. You may have to wait up to an hour to see it, then the next night you may wait five minutes and it will appear. Does it come out more then once? Yes, the Paulding Light can appear dozens of times a night, or maybe just a couple times a night. It always comes out more then once a night. It just depends upon how long you want to stay and watch. Does the light move? Yes, it moves from side to side, and it moves up and down the hill. Some have said that they have seen the light go all the way down the hill to the creek bed (washout on the road) and back up the hill. I just recently took a group to see it, and it moved back and forth and half way from the top of the hill to the washout. Where exactly is the Paulding Light? Take US 45 to Brooks Pond Road. This is just a mile or so south of the community of Paulding and North of Watersmeet, Michigan. This is in the Upper Peninsula county of Ontonagon. Please be aware that in Paulding there is a road called Sleepy Hollow Road. The Paulding Light IS NOT on that road. Look for the Brown US Forest Service Sign, saying Brooks Pond Campground. Then you will need to turn to the West on that road. Then go straight down that road. You will come to a road that turns to the left (south), don't turn on that road as that takes you to the campground. Continue to go straight a half mile. You will see a beautiful US Forest Service sign explaining that you are now at the location to see the Mysterious Paulding Light. There will be a gaurd rail to prevent cars from going down the road to the washout. Stop and enjoy. Can you see the light from different locations on this road? No, for someone unexplained reason hundreds of people have come from the back side of the hill that the light appears and can see nothing, while people from the other side, looking to the West, can see it as clear as day. Also people have walked right up to the location that the light appears and cannot see it. To see the light, you need to stay back by the gaurd rail. Has any studies been done to figure out the cause of the light? I have been told by hundreds of people that different Universitys have studied it, and that people with radios and airplanes have studied it to see if it is some type of reflection, possibly from a car. Could it be a reflection from a car? That would be the scientific explanation of the Paulding Light as the light usually starts off red, then goes to a bright white light. Problem is the light appears everynight, 365 days a year, at all times of the night. In the Upper Peninsula we often have a total of 2 cars on our main highways, the Federal Highways, and that is on a busy Saturday Night. We just don't have a lot of traffic in this area, especially at 2 in the morning on a Tuesday morning! What are the non-scientific explanations of the light? The most common is the true story of an individual that worked for the railroad and was involved in an accident. The road the light appears on is an old railroad grade and the person was decapitated. The other "theories" is that this is a Native American Spirit. This location is in an area where we had and have a strong and very proud Native American culture. The other theories include a signal from and to UFO's. This theory has come from the fact that currently we have 3 people that are missing from our county. What do you feel the light is? I, along with the hundreds of other people that see it and take people to see it, cannot explain it. I can say that it is there, it does appear, on some nights it is as bright as a car head light, then others it is dim. Everyone that goes to see it on a clear night, will see it. This is not something that one person in the group will see it, and others will not. Would you and do you take people to see it? Depending upon what I have going on, as I also do the morning show on UP 105.7 and the mid-day show on Y-101. If I have the time, I am more then happy to take people to see it. The best nights for me is Friday and Saturday Nights. What about in the winter? The problem is that the county only plows the road down so far, then you have to walk for a half mile. If you have a snowmobile, this works best in the winter. How can I contact you? You can call me at WUPY/WCUP at 906-884-9668 for more information and to possibly set up a time to take you, your family, or your group. Ask for Skip Schulz. |
| Date: 12/9/1999 6:45:00 PM As a "local" to the Paulding light, and the one that just submitted that rather long explanation, I would like to respond to the comments that the UP uses this as a Tourist Attraction. And to the person that doesn't think there is anything else in the UP, "unique." Obviously you have never visited the UP. We are a very proud and independent people. Our area is unique to the fact that we have the best snow in the midwest for snowmobiling, the best fishing with Lake Superior, Thousands and thousands of acres of Public Hunting Land, some of the best ski hills in the midwest, and the Copper Mining National Historic Park. All of which are advertised and target the tourists. Sir/Mam, we don't even have a sign,a SINGLE sign by ANY higway promoting the Paulding Light. For this is something we in the UP DO NOT WANT to see made into a mockery. So explain to me if this is just a TOURIST gimmick, why this is one of the BEST KEPT secrets around? We're happy to have tourists come to our area, and yes we know that the Paulding Light is becoming a Tourist Attraction...but this has come from word of mouth by fellow tourists...NOT by all of us that actually live and work in this area. One concern all of us have that live around the Paulding Light is seeing this area of the Ottawa National Forest turn into a sight full of litter, into a sight where we have to worry about vandalism, a sight where we cannot take friends and family. Afterall if all of us in the UP have to make a living on the Tourism that the Paulding Light offers...we just as well cut off our head and shine our own light. If you want to contact me, you can email me at sschulz@up.net. Please don't take me wrong, we want the tourists, but come up and see all the other things that makes Ontonagon County so very beautiful! |
| Date: 12/11/1999 9:05:00 PM I saw the Paulding light today and it was pretty boring, but then some rob zombie look alike came and started telling me stories of the light chasing his friends and turning red. This weirdo said when the light turns green it likes you and when it turns red it hates you. Pete Bussiere |

| Date: 12/30/1999 5:56:00 PM I saw the lights on December 28th. They are cars. Through a 30 power spotting scope you can see two headlights coming towards you on the left side, and two red brake lights driving away on the right side. With the naked eye, it looks wierd, but with the spotting scope it is very obvious. It is not by chance, that the red lights, brake lights are on the right side, just like on a road, and the headlights are on the left. Also, have you ever seen headlights that looked pink, or maybe a little blue, sorry, the lights are cars. The real question is what road they are on. |
| Date: 1/3/2000 8:57:00 AM I was recently up in the U.P. during the holidays and my friend told me about the strange light that appears every night. I had to go and see this to believe her. So, we went around 5pm, around dusk, and to my surprise the light came to us in the car. It became very bright and looked like it was moving back and forth and up and down. Eventually the light faded and then turned red. As we were leaving, the light seemed to follow us out of the road. LAter that night more of my friends wanted to see the light so we went again. They tried to walk to the soruce of the light, but were stopped by a river at the end of the hill. They were definitly amazed and couldn't figure out the legend. However, it was odd that the light came again and my friends did not see it when they were going down the hill. Overall, the light was truly interesting and I recommend everyone seeing it sometime. |

I live in Upper Wisconsin and I'm about 45 minutes from the Paulding Light. We travel up there often to how our friends from all over. A few times when I was up there you can hear a train whistle, but only a few people hear it. Another time I was up with some friends and there was this lady that had a camera and equipment set up. I started talking to her and she said "That she was from 2 groups that were trying to figure out what this could be. Well, she also said that there are 7 of these in the world. On in Michigan, Netherlands and South America. But she didn't know where the other 4 were. She also said people see shadow people like in the movie Ghost." She thinks that it's a spiritual porthole that people pass through . Sometimes when there are a few people at the site the light will move closer to the barricade that block cars from traveling down the hill towards a little creek. Always I've seen pictures of the light about 50 yards from this barricade with people standing around. About 2 weeks later we went up there again, and that same lady was there and I was asking her questions about things she said before to see if she was making things up. I really don't think she was because she said everything the same as before. Just then a women approached us with pictures of the light. One showed the light very close to barricade and she said that they didn't even see this picture till they got it developed. The third was a picture of a smoky image of a dog and it could also of been a women. It was the scariest thing I have ever seen it was a ghost no doubt about it. The lady said she took the Picture to the University of Minnesota Duluth and had the picture examined for possible lens problem or just to see if the picture was real and they said it was not smoke because it didn't' have characteristics of smoke. Any Questions to pauldinglight@yahoo.com |
| Date: 2/7/2000 12:55:00 AM I Went to the paulding light 6 times, the first time me and about 8 friends went, and the light was coming closer and closer, a small ball floated up to us it came about 35-45 feet away! It was swaying back and forth like a lantern , and whenevr we flashed our lighters it flased back!It seemed really spiritual , so i went back every weekend for 5 weeks! and it never even came close after that one night! Poeple that visit it should watch out as michigan kids try to make you think there cars are the light by driving alot closer to it on side roads and driving around flashing lights ! and poeple telling lies cause the local kids can tell a tourist!Any questions Email me! Chief1up@aol.com |
| Date: 2/22/2000 11:21:00 AM Hi-I have visited the light a couple of times. The first time my friends and I went we were there all by ourselves and it was snowing heavily. We waited for around an hour then this light came up from other the hill and moved from side to side as it looked as if it was 'walking' down the hill. One of my friends that was with us owns a cabin in Watersmeet and has seen the light many times. The first time she went-she said her brother went up to the light. They said they could see him and the light but when he came back down he said he couldn't see anything. After the light finally came that night we stayed for around and hour and a half. It kept coming back again and again. Changing colours and moving from side to side up and down the hill. We finally left and went back the next night. The next night there were alot of people there waiting and watching. We decided to get out of the van and walk to the base of the hill. I had my camcorder recording the light. Then in the full screen the light got VERY large and bright red. Needless to say I went back to the van very quickly. Later while we were watching the video you could see it 'jump' at the screen and change to red. That was the last time we went to go see during that trip. But, I was telling my boyfriend about it last night and I think we will be planning a trip to the UP so that he can see it for himself. That will be alot of FUN! :) So, overall it's a very interesting thing to see and if you happen to be near Watersmeet-you should go look for yourself... :) |

I have been to the light before.I was just there last summer with my family and I went there about 7 years ago. When we went the light would only come when it was quiet and dark. it moved back and forth.I also noticed that the lightning bugs were really weird. They didn't just blink like normal lighting bugs, they flickered.I thought that was really weird because the closer we got to the light the more the lighting bugs would flicker. |
| Date: 3/8/2000 7:31:00 PM I find it funny that anyone would even believe that the Paulding Light is cars. I have been there when the light has come quite close, and it is completely obvious that there is no way that the light could be cars. That idea is, I'm sorry to say, stupid. I think that people need to take a little leap of faith and believe that the light is a ghost or spirit of some kind. |
| Date: 3/13/2000 9:16:00 AM My friend and I were wondering too! WE also would like to know about the red eyes of the UP!! |
|
Date: 3/24/2000 6:09:00 PM
Been there a couple of time. About 15 years in between. I was glad to see that the area had not changed to much. I'm not one to believe in the supernatural but a few hours after we returned to the Gateway lodge I wanted to go back out and get some more footage. I was unable to get anyone else to go so I DIDN'T GO ALONE. Hey why push it. :) |

Ok, listen up...These Paulding Lights are intense as a hernia. The lights itself are totally awesome, but the strange part about it was that we took photos and when we got them developed, there were no indications of any photos being taken, and NO, we are not stupid. The negetives came out completely blank, no blackness at all. There were photos taken before and after, and those came out fine, but strangely enough, no Paulding Light photos! They are a must see! SWAMP GAS MY ASS! C-Bass and Luke |

To the person that explains these lights as "cars" I think the stangest thing of all is how these "cars" drive along the tops of the powerlines, sway back and forth, drive verticaly and in a diagonal line through the sky!!! Also I have never seen a car spin continously and silently in a circle which is the only way a "car" could change its lights from red to white to green and back to white! |

To the guy who took pictures and they didn't turn out. I had my video camera and the Paulding Light came out great...it moved across the screen and up and down and then disappeared. I have about 10 minutes of footage on it. . I was surprised it was so clear. I can't understand why it didn't show up on a regular camera.(it should have)? Someone had mentioned somewhere in the UP about the "Red Eyes of the UP" does anyone know about this or where its at. If so please contact me E-mail...pmarshke@yahoo.com We are planning a trip to the UP in July...would appreciate any feed back on this at all...even if its only what you heard. Thanks |

Well ive been through there during the day and it seems as if it were further away than it appears at night. Sept 2000 a group of us will go there during the day to investigate the surrounding area of the paulding light and will inform anybody that would like to know whats out there if you are curious enough to see for your self email me banditi73@hotmail.com |
| Date: 6/2/2000 11:01:00 PM I was at the light this evening and saw nothing at all. We did see the car lights in the distance which were obviously not the light becasue it was very apparent that it was traffic on hwy 45. Ironically, it was probably people coming to see the light. Some credibility of the phenemonon was lost when we met a lady parked out there. She claimed to have come from "The Department of the Paranormal," whatever that is. She said that she had seen the lights during the time that we were there when we and everyone else didn't. I asked her what distinguished the light from car lights and she said "well, it is kind of hard but the trained eye can see them." Whatever. So with that we left in disappointment maybe to return some other night to see what all the excitement is about. |
| Date: 7/2/2000 2:25:00 PM we are going to see it this week then will give a report on it |
|
Date: 7/3/2000 2:13:00 PM
There is no question the light is traffic on US45 about 4 miles away. |
| Date: 7/9/2000 6:13:00 PM I recently had the thrilling chance to see the Paulding Light. I feel the train's brakeman story is very true. As the light rises and falls it could resemble the train coming over the hills and the light fading. Some of the local people say the light changes color and sometimes there are two Paulding Lights! It was awesome, and i can't wait to go back. But to anyone that goes,,,wear mosquito repellent!!!! |
| Date: 7/11/2000 9:30:00 PM I used to go to see the light with my dad back in 1969. I worked at a resort down in Land O'Lakes and we'd go visit my uncle in Watersmeet and then ride over to see the light. I can't believe that this light is still there over 30 years later. I went there in 1998 and saw it again after many years. It's great. back in '69 I thought I also remembered a bridge on that road, but now it looks like its gone, but the light lives on. Can't believe the scientists can't figure this one out especially when radios are used. Hope I can get back there in 30 more years! Ha! |
| Date: 7/17/2000 12:38:00 PM to the people who say it is a car it is not because we went around to the other side so we were seeing the ghost from behind it is not a car |
| Date: 7/18/2000 6:03:00 PM I live 45 minutes north of the light, and I finally went to see it last month. About five friends and myself walked over the first guard rail, went down the hill and crossed a river, went over a second guard rail, and started walking up the mysterious hill. The light appeared red at first. Then, it turned white and it started coming toward us, while moving side to side down the hill. It soon dissappeared! And suddenly at the snap of a finger, it appeared and got really brite, and lit up the whole trail. Let me tell you, we never ran so fast in our life. It is totally freaky! |
| Date: 7/27/2000 12:45:00 PM to Patty who is looking for the copy of unsolvedmysteries on the paulding light... I contacted unsolvd mysteries and they did not do an episode on this pualding light. however, she said the show "THE SIGHTING" did. I, personally, have never heard of this show and have not contacted them yet. |

| Date: 8/11/2000 11:46:00 AM One winter night a couple of friends and I went to the Paulding Light. When we got ready to leave,we got stuck in a snow bank on the side of the railroad track. I swear the light knew we were stuck and started coming towards in a fast, circular motion. I couldn't believe my eyes. This fascinating light was soooo huge. We finally got out of the snow bank and sped down the gravel road. This light followed us all the way to the highway. I never was so scared in my whole life. I truly believe this is soemthing that is not a part of us. It is something that is one day going to reveal itself in a more visible manner. Iron River Resident |

| Date: 8/14/2000 3:09:00 PM I was just at the light two nights ago. At first I thought it was a street light in the distance, but it kept moving and was far too bright to be one. Also, we drove in from 45, so it can't be the cars from that highway because the highway was BEHIND us, and the light was in the opposite direction. Who knows more about this? Write me at ladek@sstop.com |
| Date: 8/15/2000 12:22:00 PM I have a spooky and very true story about what happened the night my friends went to see the light. My friend Scott Anderson and Bob Wech and Bob Mercer went to see the light in the fall/winter of 96. It was a spooky night around 11pm. Scott was in the front seat with Bob W. the light came very close that night it was only a coulpe hundered feet away. The light would change colors from white to red. They were all starting to get a weird feeling. Then all of a sudden Bob M. in the back seat cried out. He kept yelling get us out of here. He wept like a little kid for an hour as well as a few hale marry's (no kidding)on the ride back to the cottage. They couldn't get a word out of him until they got back. It turns out he was looking at the light with a pair of binoculars. He saw the Grim Reaper, sickel and all. The next day they went back while it was light out near the spot where Bob saw the Grim Reaper. Inscribed in the ground were the letters BOB. Now they know the letters were not very old because the night before it rained and it would have washed the letters away. For 1 month straight Bob was going to church at all hours of the day and night. I mean he was convinced that he was going to die! During that month he heard someone come into his appartment. He thought it was his roomate. Then an hour later his roomate came home and stopped in to talk to him. Bob said I thought you came in an hour ago, well he didn't he just got off work. This kind of stuff happened for a while. I don't know about you but the hairs on the back of my neck are standing up right now. I have gone their once and never got the feeling that anything bad was going to happen but I did have one weird thing happen. We walked down the road all the way to the washed out bridge then came back. When we got back to our motorcycles their were at least 2 other groups telling us that their was a mother bear and two cubs that crossed behind us. We never saw or heard any bears when we went down the path. We saw the light it was cool, something is their but I have no clue what. dant2000@yahoo.com |

I went tonight for the first time to the Paulding Light. I'm an engineering student at Michigan Technological University and I have no explanation for what I saw tonight. I'm going back tomorrow night with an infrared night scope, high powered binoculars, and if I can get a spectrometer and an intensity meter I'll get some readings with them. An indian woman told me that there's an old burial ground out there and that it has something to do with that. But that's about the fifth story I've heard. |
| Date: 8/17/2000 6:15:00 AM I also viewed the Paulding Light this past weekend and would like more information on it--both the story of the headless conductor and also any possible explanation for this mysterious light |
| Date: 8/21/2000 11:42:00 AM I just recently visited the Paulding lights and it amazing and creepy! I definatly think that everyone should go check it out! |
| Date: 8/30/2000 11:25:00 AM The LIGHT... ohhh the light.... where art thou now. |
| Date: 8/30/2000 11:26:00 AM I'm right here. |
| Date: 8/30/2000 11:29:00 AM Solo boninchiko. Jeembo. Great Ganeesh. Eel. "Big Boy" Merl. Jakob. All as one in the light. Be here with us now. |
| Date: 9/4/2000 9:02:00 PM Has this happened to anyone? We visited the Mytery Light about the 3rd weekend in July. We were amazed and a little skeptical of what we had witnessed. However, when we were all in the car, and turned to leave, the driver AND passenger both saw a light in their side mirrors. After the driver acknowledged what he saw was also in his rearview mirror, it then quickly disappeared. There was no car or persons directly behind our vehicle, (facing in our same direction) although there were others at the light that evening. The passengers in the back did not see this light, yet the driver and passenger could not believe how brightly it had shown in their mirrors and how close it seemed to be to our vehicle. We left the light quickly! IF you have comments, please e-mail at kb-1@juno.com |

From Pauline, an NMU student:

I've been hearing stories about this thing for a few weeks now, and I was really excited when a group said they were going out there last night. I jumped on the band wagon and we made the two hour trek from Marquette to Paulding. About a bathroom stop and back tracking a mile to the road later, we were at the 'Mysterious Paulding Light' location. My very first impression was excitement when I saw a bright pinpoint of light about two miles away, and then a red light next to it. My hoped was quenched a moment later when I was told, and then realized for myself, that these were just cars in the distance on the highway. There was a lady there, and she was a little strange, but I'll get back to her later. Our group was on a mission, we wanted to see something spooky, ghostlike, whatever.

There were 16 of us total, and 11 of us decided that we would start walking, and get to the earlier mentioned field where you can see the light from behind. Off we walked into the darkness, the full moon guiding our steps. It was really cold out it seemed, but then, we HAD just been sitting in cars for two hours. We all hopscotched our way across the creek (this was fun because all the rain had raised the water level quite a bit, so said our returning guide), and started back up the next hill. When we got to the fork in the road, we paused to decided how we were going to continue. Some of us were not the most thrilled about continuing onto private property, and personally, I was a little intimidated by all the stories I read on this site.

As it happened though, we all decided to continue down the left roadway, and we were on our way. I can't say whether we heard anything or not while we were walking, 11 people in a group tend to make a lot of noise when they're all walking down a rocky, dirt road. Things did get interesting when we got to the path going into the woods, and there was a guard post, along with a sign stating that private property was clearly posted to our right. See, this was the path to the field, and this is where our group of 11 became two groups, eight and three. The group of eight wanted to go all the way to the field, no holds barred, it's their way or the highway. The other group was really just two people and a regretful boyfriend who had serious problems with tromping through private property and/or thicker woods. I was in that smaller group that wanted to turn back. I'm from the city, forests are a foreign thing to me.

Anyway, we started back down the dirt road. As we were travelling, it seemed a lot quieter, and occasionally heard what I'm going to claim were frogs.. maybe toads. I'm not entirely sure, it was weird. At one point, we stopped and just listened, and this was the spooky part of the trip back, because ALL we could hear was the wind in the trees. No crickets, no frogs, nothing. That was more than a little disconcerting. We started up the last little incline before the drop down to the creek, and I noted that I felt remarkably warm. It was almost like a sudden wash of warmth throughout me. I'm not sure if it was just from all the physical exercise or not, but it was a little uncanny when the other two said they felt oddly warm as well. Probably just strange weather patterns..

The rest of the way back to the road block was uneventful, BUT, when we got back, the people that had stayed behind said that they had seen the Paulding light three times approximately the same time that we were walking back. I figured it was just more of the headlights, but they swear that it was different. Nothing eventful happened for a while, and then the other eight of the group got back from their nature hike. They had made it all the way to the field, and hung out on a rock or something, and they said it was the same dead silence that we had experienced. Mind you, when we got back to the road block, crickets were chirping and all the animal life works were in play. The second group hadn't seen anything while they were in the field and at that point the whole of us sat down and waited, cracking jokes and having a good old time freezing our butts off (yes, it was really cold again).

As time passed, and it got into the wee hours of the morning, everyone was going but our carfull and five others in their car. The strange lady had tried to get us to believe that there was some portal in the woods some twenty yards away, and a couple other random things about shadow people and whatnot, but I don't believe any of that. She eventully took off as well, and we pulled the two cars right up to the guardrail because the temperature had dropped quite a bit, and we waited for another forty some minutes just watching in the cars. At one point some police came by, likely to make sure we weren't drunk or high, and they left after making sure we weren't causing trouble. The other car took off for home, and it was just the five of us. We were bound and determined to see the light, and we porbably would have stayed all night if it hadn't started downpouring. We remembered reading that it had to be a clear night, I guess ghosts don't like the rain, and decided to throw in the towel with a lot of frustration and disappointment.

So all in all, I never got to see the light, and I'm very skeptical about some things considering how obvious it was that there were headlights and taillights in the distance. I can't deny the spookyness of the silences, and I'll definately go back out there when I get the chance. I'll have to wait until I get the stamina to put in a 6 hour evening starting around 9 p.m., and if I see anything, I'll try to report accurately. |
| Date: 9/15/2000 11:44:00 AM Pauline: Sorry.. tried to get it to do paragraphs.. :( |
| Date: 9/15/2000 9:53:00 PM The light is real, whether it's cars in the distance or not. I'm inclined to think not, given the remarkable intensity of the white and the unexplainable movement of the red. Also, there just aren't that many cars on Route 45 at night! We did the same hike ... nothing to be seen, really, at least during the daytime. There is indeed a swamp at Dog Meadow, which is just beyond the high point of the power line right of way, at Big Rock. We heard silence also, except it was suddenly broken by the sound of jet fighters, going very low and very fast. Never saw them through the trees, but certainly heard them. This area is part of the Big Bear MOA, or Military Operations Area, meaning that it's semi-restricted airspace. It's controlled by Green Bay Approach Control, and any private aircraft wishing to enter this area at low altitude is wise to contact GBAC to see if the area is "hot." The light is something not immediately explainable, and it is quite worth seeing. Yes, the lady, tripod and all, was there, just like they say. Planet Janet, said to be from the Piggly Wiggly. Light? Yep. Shadow people? Nope. Don't think so ... |
| Date: 9/15/2000 11:34:00 PM Pauline: .. yeah.. she didn't have a tripod.. but she did have a camera.. |

I see the light every year when I make my annual trip to Watersmeet. MI. I've heard many explinations for the light, including swamp gas, a distant highway and the Piezo Electric effect from minerals in the ground. I seen the light change intensities, colors and even appear as two or more distinct points of light. In years past you could drive down the road, however it is now blocked. It must have something to do with the angle of observation because if you hike down the road to the next hill you no longer see the light. |

I have been to the light many times. Sometimes I saw it and sometimes I didn't, but most of the time I did. I am going up there this weekend to visit my family and I am going to the light again. I have to write a paper about something that I can observe for an English class for college. I decided to write my paper on the light because I think it is very interesting and mysterious.Heather (my e-mail--Heather128803@cs.com) |
| Date: 10/10/2000 8:37:00 PM alright guys I hate to burst your bubble but only probably less then 65 persent of people that have been to the mystery light and said they saw it really haven't. ok you look forward and you see white lights on the left and red on the right its us 45. to tell this go to the end of robbins pond road to the stop sign at 45 turn left and go eight miles up the road when you get to about 6 you can see the incline in the road go to the top of the hill and turn around flash your lights blinkers whatever then go back to the mystery light and ask the people there what they have seen and they will tell you what you did because your seeing us 45. if you want to se efor your self tell someone else to do tthe same. but there is a phenomenon going on there. you can tell that because sometimes the light will come close to you and it is a triangle or two lights verticle the lights will go green blue violet. and people say that when they walk toward it they cant se eit that is because they are looking at 45 and when they get close the hill get steeper and you cant see over the trees. when I dofund this out about 45 I was disappointed I thought that i have seen the mystery light but it wasn't there is a local lady there with pictures of what she has seen she is short with blondish white hair talk to her if you see her she will explain more to you she is there more then 4 times a week. she can tell you what to look for what you are seeing abd aobu the whole us 45 thing. sorry to dissapoint all you guys who thought they have seen something next time bring higher power binoculars and you can see the road us 45 the cars and the two headlights and tail lights. any questoins or more information aobut thelight I would like to know email me at xboarder144@aol.com |
| Date: 10/12/2000 10:56:00 AM I live about 45 minutes away from the Paulding Light in Ironwood Michigan. It's been said that the Paulding Light is merely the reflection of light of the highway. Whether this is true or not, I don't know. That's just one theory that has been developed. |
| Date: 10/24/2000 2:08:00 PM I'VE FINALLY AM GETTING A CHANCE TO TELL MY STORY, AFTER A COUPLE OF MONTHS OF NOT BEING ABLE TO GET TO THIS PAGE!!! I LOVE MYSTERIES, I COULDNT WAIT TO GO SEE THIS PAULDING LIGHT THAT I HEARD SO MUCH ABOUT. IT WAS JUST ABOUT SUNSET WHEN WE ARRIVED AND YOU COULD ALREADY SEE THE LIGHT. NOT EXACTLY WHAT I WAS EXPECTING BUT I STAYED TO SEE IF ANYTHING ELSE WOULD APPEAR. IT DIDNT. THE LIGHT IS NOT MUCH OF A MYSTERY, ALTHOUGH I WISH IT WAS. I WOULD LIKE TO BELIEVE IT IS MORE THAN WHAT I FIGURE IT TO BE. I SPENT THE ENTIRE NEXT DAY DRIVING AND LOOKING AROUND AT THE GEOGRAPHICS OF THE AREA AND I FOUND WHAT I EXPECTED TO FIND.. I WAS VERY DISSAPOINTED BUT IT WAS FUN SOLVING THE "MYSTERY". IF ANY ONE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ABOUT THE LIGHT GET IN TOUCH WITH BRIAN AT BCV727899@aol.com, OR MAYBE YOU WILL WANT TO FIGURE IT OUT YOURSELF, ITS REALLY NOT THAT DIFFICULT... SORRY |
| Date: 10/31/2000 11:57:00 AM Let's just say people from the UP are morons. I know this because my mom has lived there for many years now and I can honestly say they are very deprived. I can't beleive that Unsolved Mysteries would be dumb enough to do a story on cars driving up and down a road. That's all it is. No mysterious guy with a lantern and no indians dancing, just cars. The bright light people see are the headlights, and the red light is the tail lights as the cars turn the curve. Sorry to ruin it for you. For more info, email WarrDoggatNMU@aol.com |
| Date: 11/6/2000 10:43:00 PM Oh, Goodness ... who's the moron? |
| Date: 11/6/2000 11:12:00 PM And he even left his e-mail address ... talk about a moron ... hit 'im, Boys! |
| Date: 11/28/2000 11:07:00 PM I commend the Michigan Technological University engineering student in pursuing a scientific approach, hoping to use professional metering apparatus to investigate the Paulding Light. I am also told by an MTU engineering graduate (now working on the West Coast) who has seen the light, that this phenomena is no car light by any stretch of the imagination. She thoroughly enjoyed viewing the light and recommends seeing it. She saw it in the winter. /// With the crass and unknowledgeable comment in this forum about the Upper Peninsula population being referred to as "morons" by WarrDoggatNMU@aol.com, there's a saying throughout Michigan: "Friends Don't Let Friends Go to Northern" (Northern Michigan University/NMU). T-shirts are also made with this logo, as I own one. It's now increasingly clearer how that phrase is appropo. It's too bad WarrDoggatNMU hates his mother and obviously many other things as well. Perhaps, too, the NMU in his e-mail address is really a university-student wannabe - it's hard to believe this person may be affiliated with any university. The Upper Peninsula is a beautiful area, and they want to keep it that way for as long as possible - NO FREEWAYS!! |
| Date: 12/1/2000 8:58:00 PM Very well said. Thank You! |
| Date: 12/10/2000 1:04:00 AM Some additional, recent information from the MTU engineering graduate now living on the West Coast: She came in for a reunion at MTU this September, 2000, and went again to see the Paulding Lights. NOTE: The lights were seen at 4:30 IN THE AFTERNOON! It was a gray, darkly overcast day, and the lights were clear. Her viewpoint is that the area has underground iron deposits and that contributes to the phenomena seen. Apparently, this is occurring 'round the clock, it's just that it is better seen in darker conditions. |

Hello: I was looking for more about the Paulding Lights so I found this page that got me interested enough to go up there last Sunday Dec 17th. What I saw 4 times in about an hour was a white light that seemed to rise up above the trees and comes towards me along the power lines in a waving motion like a knuckle ball before dropping back down behind the hill. The 4th time it actually looked like more of a peach color. Unless there is a kind of wierd diffraction that bends the light it doesn't really make sense for it to be car headlights. Althought it might be possible to see cars on that road to the north it doesn't explain the rising motion. When a car comes up over a hill the light is blocked by the hill untill it gets above the hill so at most a headlight could rise up from road level to about 2 or 3 feet above the road when its coming towards you and that motion would hardly be noticeable when viewed from 6 miles away. It could go down much farther than 3 feet when the car goes downhill towards you but it can't really rise much and be visible behind the hill. Anyway what Isaw was interesting enough to want go there and study this light in more detail. A little snow was coming down when I was there so the light was probably dimmer than normal and it just barely showed up on video as about like a medium brightness star but more spread out.It looked like a single light through a 20 power spotting scope. | Date: 1/14/2001 11:29:00 PM After reading the different stories numerous of you wrote it is very intresting that most you wrote "almost" the exact same thing give or take a few parts. Some friends say that they walked out there. and on their way back they said that they saw a late 70's style car that looked like it had been burned or had a burnt look to it as it if was on fire at one point in time. they had said also that the car was not there when they went by the first time. if anybody else has seen this car please email me. or even if you have and intresting story bout the paulding light. my emailer is mgalant_94@yahoo.com thank you |
| Date: 2/26/2001 5:23:00 PM i would like to know how i can get a copy of the footage on unsolved mysteries that was on tv about the paulding light!! i have been there many times and my last trip was on feb. 24th 2001 daisy632000@aol.com |
| Date: 3/1/2001 10:13:00 AM My husband and his family were up in Paulding to see the lights too. Some people have said that the lights are from cars from a highway that sits in back of the hill where the paulding light is seen. I dont believe it because the light that I saw was too bright to be car lights and changed color as we stood there. |

About a year ago my Family and I visited the Paulding Lights. I have to start out by saying that at first I was probably the biggest skeptic in the bunch of us. The truth of the matter now is that I am more convinced of supernatural phenomena than any of us. While were were waiting for the "light" to appear I was watching the area that I was told to with a pair of binoculars. The way the "light" appeared was what initially took my breath away. Within a couple of seconds the "light" began to move from side to side and in somewhat of a circular motion, after a few seconds of this activity the "light" began moving down the hill toward the wash. Immediatly the hair on the back of my neck stood straight up, and I was absolutely terrified. I couldn't get this whole episode out of my mind, so the very next day I returned to the spot in daylight hours. I again had my binaculars and made a very intense sweep of the area to be sure there was no evidence of any practical joke. Of course there was not. Something I must point out is the fact that the "light" was one of the most intense things I have ever witnessed. The reason this is relevant is because I am an electrician and working on lighting systems every day at work, and I know for a fact that there are very few lights out there that have that intensity and brilliance. One of the only lights on the market that would have appeared this intense is an aircraft light, and I am pretty sure there wasn't an airplane on the next hillside. There are some people who try to disprove the ghosly "light" with the explanation of gases or vapors or such. Well in order for this to be the case, one would have to believe that light from the sun or moon would have to hit these vapors just perfectly every single day of the year to make this "light" appear. The same thing can be said of the ore theory. I can't be 100% certain of what I it was that I saw, but I know what I believe. Make your own judgement and vistit the entity yourself, I promise that you will at least be very intrigued. |

| Date: 3/7/2001 6:52:00 PM It is cars. I have seen it with my own eyes, through a telescope. I thought it was a bit strange when I first saw it, also. But a telescope makes a world of difference. You can even see it during the day with a good telescope, provided the cars in the distance have their headlights on. You can not only see the headlights during the day, but you can see cars pulling out from side streets. (I could see motor homes pulling out from side streets one summer day.) An interesting fact is that the headlights almost appear to be a light that somebody hung from the power line far in the distance. When I first saw the light through a telescope, that is exactly what I thought it was, until the car started down the long hill, and I saw it move in relation to the power line. When you are at the guard rail on Robbins pond road, you are looking north toward north-south US45 a long way in the distance. Look at the side of the road as you travel US45 near Paulding. You see powerlines. The same powerlines that you see next to Robbins pond road. |

Hey AA, Are you from the U.P.??? I posted a story on this same light a couple months ago...it IS very mysterious. I haven't seen this place before but I'm only a couple hours from it... ![]() |
| Date: 3/7/2001 8:25:00 PM I went to the Paulding Light approximately 4 years ago, never to return. I went with a group of friends and we were all very skeptical, initially! When we first got there the light was white and not moving much. We got extremely bored and were fustrated because we expected something exciting to happen. We had heard so much hype about it. We got so bored some of us decided to start cursing, and criticizing the legend. We continued to curse and make other vulgar comments about the legend when the light suddenly became red and intensified with our vulgarity. It seem to be coming closer and closer the more we continued. During this time a few of the other members of our group were trying to walk up to the light. They told us later that it was impossible becuase you could only go so far. They said there was a big ditch that prevented them from going any further. After they told us of their adventure we explained to them what had happened and asked if they had noticed the light change red and or if it had appeared to be coming closer to them. They replied no they had not seen anything like that. When they got to the ditch they said the closer they walked towards it the more it seemed to disappear and when they came to the ditch they could no longer see it at all. Needless to say we were all very scared and left never to return. I personally would like to go back someday and recommend a definite must to anyone who is considering going. I think I and those I went with would act a little more mature this time around. |

The fact is that the very top of the hill (it's known locally as Big Rock), headlights or not, where the lights seem to come from, is posted private property. Crossing the creek at the end of Robbins Pond Road is no big deal, as there are rocks across it. As you walk up the dirt road (up the power line right of way) in the daytime and come to the fork in the road, stay left. You will see "No Trespassing" signs everywhere, on both sides of the road. At what is the "trail" to the very top of Big Rock (on your right), you will find major "no trespassing" postings and wooden blockades sunk into the ground on the entry path to prevent vehicles from going up in there. We didn't go up that trail, but we spoke with several young locals who have ... and they claim there is absolutely nothing there out of the ordinary. These guys were good solid kids partying and having a few beers at the end of the Robbins Pond Road. I have an exceptionally good ability to pick up on BS, and I didn't see it with these kids. The well-known "lady" was there our first night, and although she had some interesting photos, the things she said didn't ring true. It's my personal feeling that she needs to sort of "get a life" and move on. Eventually, as the road swerves to the west and back north, moving beyond Big Rock, you will indeed come to a big swamp, still going straight north along the old RR grade. There are unmarked sand access roads to this area just a short distance beyond the Robbins Pond exit, and they will be on your left going north. This is Ottawa National Forest land, so no one should hesitate to drive back in there and have a look. No one can prosecute you for driving on lands that we all own. Who owns the privately-owned area around Big Rock, and WHY? You can see that it's privately owned if you buy a topographical map of that area from the Forest Service at the Ranger Station in Watersmeet. It's a rectangular area shaded in white ... which means privately owned. And the map I bought was dated from the early 1980's ... indicating that this area has been privately owned for a long time. Who would want to own this area, and why? The "old railroad grade" indeed was a Chicago and North Western RR grade in the very early 1900's ... that only went as far as Paulding. I learned this from studying old RR maps at the RR museum at Spooner, Wisconsin last September. The people there who run this wonderful museum had never heard of this phenomenon. Finally, I will say that even though this old power line right-of-way (which, as I understand used to be the original Route 45, and which used to be a C&NW Railroad right-of way "lines up" perfectly with the "new" Route 45 coming over the crest of the hill coming from Paulding to the north, there's absolutely no way that what I and my fiancee both saw, on two nights in a row, were car headlights. There's something strange there. The same brilliant white and the "dancing" red that so many others describe here. I'll ask again ... who owns the small rectangular parcel of land right at Big Rock, and why? Please post here. Thanks and well wishes for a good summer at the Light. |
| Date: 3/17/2001 12:30:00 AM As the author of the last somewhat lengthy entry to this thread, I will stand by everything that I wrote. It's the absolute truth, as best I could present my experiences. But I would ask all in this forum to approach the entire Upper Penninsula of Michigan ... an area we all need to protect ... with kindness and respect. The people who live in this area are good-hearted people who, if you treat them properly, will treat you as one of their own. Please respect them and their wishes to keep the Paulding Light an unspoiled, unlittered area. And please talk softly when visiting the phenomenon. Thank You. |

| Date: 4/6/2001 1:36:00 AM I think it's all about Big Rock, geomagnetic anomalies, and perhaps the swamp at Dog Meadow. If it's cars on 45, there must be a "lens effect" in the atmosphere. And lens effects simply don't occur every night of the year. Let's get this figured out this year. Let's find out who owns the land at Big Rock. It's in the middle of OUR National Forest, and we have a right to know why this particular parcel of land is off-limits. Post here. |

| Date: 4/24/2001 1:34:00 PM I'm an MTU student (couple hours away) I checked out the Paulding Light last Saturday (21st) for the first time...quite a few people there, and the light put on a quite a good show...we stayed for over an hour and it was going the whole time...it moved from side to side, up and down, and at diagonals...i thought the light might be cars at first, but that doesn't seem entirely logical when you think of all the testimony that has been given, along with the structure and activity of the area...some friends and i plan on going to check the light out again soon...most likely to be a day turned into night trip...we'll see how close we can get and what type of info we can get...we've got some video and pics from last saturday's trip...and we'll probably get more next time we go...whenever that is...i recommend anyone to check it out...skeptic or not...it's cool either way |

I've posted a video of Paulding light. The video is approx. 7 minutes long and contains clips taken from one hour of recording. One of the clips "Night Shot" is basically infrared recording. For a small portion of the clip I used slow shutter to capture all of the available light. You will see the power poles on the right side during this. Enjoy. |
