Grandma's friend

This was actually my sister's experience, not my own but I believe. My Grandmother had called my mother and said that she had been sick for the past couple of weeks, that she had a flu of some type according to the doctors but that it didn't seem to be getting any better. To this my mother replied "well if it's lasted that long and not getting better you need to go back to the doctor because it might not be just a flu". My grandmother followed` my mother's advice and went back to the doctor and found out that her flu was in fact lung cancer and that they were not sure what other parts of her body were afflicted. My mother and I decided that we would move her in with us, as she at the time had been living 2 states away from us and we knew that with treatments she would probably get even sicker. I have two small children 1 girl and 1 boy. We all lived together for almost 6 months. My children had not known her until she had taken ill which I still feel was a terrible shame because she was a really intelligent and caring woman. She also had a cocker spaniel dog who was her best friend. She took him everywhere with her, he slept with her, and when she got extremely ill he slept in her room with her. At the few times she ever left without him, he always had a loving greeting for her. He would stand on his back legs dancing around and kiss (lick) her hand. As the months passed her condition deteriorated. Even with treatments the cancer spread to her legs, liver, arms, brain, and so on. She passed away approx. 6 months after being diagnosed with cancer, in our home, with all of the immediate family touching her and telling her that it was okay to go, that we were ready. This was devastating to us all, as it usually is when a loved one dies, but her "friend" was completely crushed.

The day after she had passed on my mother, my children and I left for Missouri, as this was where my grandmother had chosen to be buried. My older sister had stayed behind an extra day to take care of last minute arrangements back home. She needed to get some laundry done and her washer wasn't working at the time so she and her two children had gone over to our house to get it done. As the first load was ready to be put into the dryer, something caught her eye. The cocker spaniel had been sleeping and then suddenly he got up, started panting and stood on his back legs dancing around and licking at the air. This of course freaked my sister and her children out and they left immediately. Nothing ever happened there again but I've always believed that my Grandmother had come back to tell her best friend goodbye.

How it changed my life:

I guess I always believed in the supernatural, and I also knew how close humans and their pets can get. I just didn't realise that animals had the same perception of apparitions. He obviously sensed her presence, much the same as humans do. He was no longer depressed acting after this happened either. I guess it was a type of closure for them both. Please do not comment unless you can be mature about it.

Date: 9/27/1999 7:43:00 PM    This was a very touching story. I have heard of this happening before with pets. They, too, grieve for their lost loved ones and I do believe she came back to tell him goodbye.
Date: 9/27/1999 7:52:00 PM    This story was just okay to me i guess. It was pretty interesting....towards the end, that is. It talked too much about the ladys condition and where she lived, etc rather than explaning her apparition and the dog incident.

Date: 9/28/1999 4:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 582    I don't agree with Amy's comment. I think you decribing the situtation and the strong family bond and your grandmothers bond with the dog gave it an emotional feeling you can relate to. I too have lost my grandfather and the entire family was there holding him and telling him he could let go. When my aunt went outside just after he passed on, she saw HUGE clouds so close to the ground you felt as if you could touch them and to one side she saw angels with beautiful golden harps. It was incrediable. It gave us such peace. I hope you and your family have the same peace that my family has. Chelle

Date: 9/28/1999 2:09:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 600    To the person who decided to leave a profane message for me, you obviously did not know that obscene comments can be removed so you're wasting your time. I watched Happy Gilmore also. Grow up! For the rest of you, thank you so much for reading and replying to my story. It really means alot to me. Author:

Date: 10/2/1999 8:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 595    This was a touching story and very well written. I agree with you about the profane comments. I have had to remove some of them from my stories.
Date: 10/9/1999 9:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 928    i really liked your story. if youlook back on the comments on
most of the storys on the site, most of us can relate to most

Date: 10/24/1999 11:59:00 AM    WHEN SHE SAID HER OLDER SISTER AND HER CHILDREN. WELL I WAS ONE OF THE CHILDREN. I REMEMBER THAT DAY WHEN MILLOW THE DOG DONE THAT I KNEW IT WAS MY GRANDMA. IT WAS LIKE I COULD SEE HER. IT WAS SO FREAKY. THIS IS REALLY TRUE. JUST REMEMBER THAT.
Date: 11/2/1999 10:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 1574    I didn't like the story. Why would anyone come back just to say good bye? When you're dead, you're dead. There's no coming back.-Jedi
Date: 12/26/1999 4:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 1432    I liked the story and I believe she came back to say goodbye...Banner
Date: 6/13/2000 12:57:00 AM    that was sad, but had a very nice ending!
Date: 10/4/2000 3:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 4206    I do not agree with Jedi. When you die you begin to live another life. If you have unfinished busniess to attend to, you attend to it. In your Grandmother's case the unfinished busniess was to say goodbye to a good friend. Good luck
