My husband and I were driving to the beach area of La Jolla, CA the other day. I commented on how it was smoggy. I could clearly see the marine layer rolling in and then as it got more over the land it turned more and more brown. He said it was ONLY the marine layer and I said no that it has to have some smog in it. He said that we were too close to the ocean to have smog (we were about 1 mile inland). I tried pointing out that the air was brown as it went across but he refused to listen and then went into a diatribe that went something like this "YOU're right! There is smog in the air. We are SO close to the ocean though that it would have to come from ASIA though!" I was really irritated with him at that point. The kids agreed that it looked like smog to them. But apparently we are all stupid because there is no smog in La Jolla.
So I went and tried researching smog and where it is and whether it can be in the air near the coast. I couldn't find anything on it though. So here are my questions...
1) Can smog be near the coast?
2) How far inland does the air have to go before it starts mingling with the pollutants and becoming smog?
3) Do you have any links that can help with smog? Like where is it? Can it happen near the coast, etc.
