Can someone help me out with 'Patron saints'?

Hey everyone. I have noticed that many other Catholics have a saint they look up to with prayers that of course are sent to God and all, but how do they actually choose the saint they like? I don't know alot about all or so many of the saints but if I'm gonna choose a patron saint, I want it to be Saint Anthony of Padua (who is on a pendant on a necklace that is around my neck) and somewhere on my bed is a prayer card for those who look up to Saint Anthony and many of his causes. Can I choose this to be my Patron Saint on my own, or just incase do I need to get permission from my Parish? I also have a Saint Christopher (primarily the Protector of travellers) sterling silver pendant that my parents got me for Christmas in 2003.

Many of Saint Anthony's patronages include animals and travellers. I do like travelling quite a bit when I can and I also am an animal rights advocate, believe it or not. It is also said that Saint Anthony loved nurturing children and I do like the idea of taking care of kids whether a baby-sitting daycare kind of thing, which is kind of unlikely for me (daycare, at least, LOL), or being a parent someday...Any tips? Advice? There are over 10,000 saints in our faith, I didn't even think there may have been half that many before searching up on it.

I would go with one that I related to on a personal level. this is a good source for learning who's the patron of what: http://www.catholic.org/saints/
Date: 8/27/2008 2:24:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63219    Thanks, Mercury. I felt pretty sure it was a personal thing, I just needed to know just incase. Thank you and now I'm pretty sure I'd like to have Saint Anthony of Padua!^_^

Date: 8/27/2008 4:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 64498    Its a personal thing me I pray to St. Francis of the Assisi patron saints of animals as well as St Christopher but I do think it is personal and you need permission from no one! LOLOLOL Priss!! :)
Date: 8/27/2008 6:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    I thought that the holy day (early May I believe) for St. Christopher was taken down because of it being more of a legend. And yes, it used to be that during Baptism a Saints name was chosen for the baby/child/adult and used as a middle name, but there was no set rule for it to be so.
Date: 8/27/2008 8:00:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63219    Lol, Kiki, thanks, but Mercury pretty much helped me out with that one, but I'm glad you had detail, too!:)
Date: 8/27/2008 9:58:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63219    Lol...I was baptized Lutheran as a baby so that was already taken care of when I joined the Catholic Church. Some of the elders in my RCIA class chose Confirmation Names, though I didn't.
Date: 9/16/2008 12:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 160    Saints are a man made part of religion and the bible does not condone either the praying to or the use of their images in worship. Thats why religion fails so tragically in their teachings because the largest religions are the ones that teach falsehoods. And why Jesus said, "Get away from me, I never knew you"... Because they believe what they are doing is acceptable when it is not.
Date: 9/16/2008 1:29:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63219    Well, PamyJo, it appears you disagree with my beliefs and I've got lots of friends who do. However, none of them are willing to say to me that Catholicism, my religion and the largest Christian denomination, is a lie. When it comes to someone who wants to debate why my religion does this or that (and as long I've got the knowledge to know the reasons why) I'm willing to try explaining. But when it comes to someone who tells me that what I believe is blaspemous or a 'falsehood', I have only this to say: 'Who cares what you think? Go eat a sausage and choke on it.'
Date: 9/16/2008 1:37:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63219    'The largest religions teach falsehoods', what garbage. Funny that the WBC consists of less than probably 500 Americans, they're the most hated and they're willing to say that 9/11 (done completely by Islamist hijackers and liberal immigration policies not yet fixed) and AIDS are curses sent from God to people who are imperfect in his eyes. I know my God doesn't hate or 'cheer on the martyrs' who happen to think that martyrdom revolves around randomly blowing yourself up and killing countless innocents.
Date: 9/16/2008 2:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 10245    Interpretation is left to the individual, PamyJo. Believe what you want, but don't go knocking the beliefs of others. Some might say the same about they way you choose to pray/worship. If his religion, is wrong, I'd like to see you to prove it without your own interpretation getting in the way.
Date: 9/16/2008 2:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    And this is not the place for a debate, nor comments that could be considered inflammatory. UH-I don't remember how Catholics find their Patron Saint. But I am sure the link from Mercury will help. :)
Date: 9/16/2008 2:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    Mercury, I agree! 100%
Date: 9/16/2008 2:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 160    This is why I have this love/hate relationship with USM... I do not think that what I said was meant to be taken the way it was. All that I meant to say is clearly the scriptires say that the use of these icons are forbidden and religion should have taught this but to do so would mean that they would relinquish their hold on people and lose a major part of income that is generated from the sale of statues, jewelry and so forth. But what confuses me is that you are trying to find a saint for yourself and do you have to get permission from your Parish when you probably have a bible that you need only pick up and read to find your answers. The Bible tells us the ONLY Mediator is Jesus no saints were ever mentioned.
Date: 9/16/2008 2:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    PamyJo-the OP (UT) wrote a post asking how one is introduced to their Patron Saint. It was not an invitation for you to tell him how he is biblically wrong.
Date: 9/16/2008 2:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 160    The title of this post is Can someone help me out with Patron Saints.... Questions invite answers.
Date: 9/16/2008 2:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    btw-Mercury, I visited that link (http://www.catholic.org/saints/). Very cool!
Date: 9/16/2008 2:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 15070    PamyJo-the discussion is over. Unless you wish to contribute to the topic at hand, which is how one goes about finding their Patron Saint. But please, feel free to start a discussion/debate anywhere else on USM. But remember, religious debates can go both ways. And any belief system can be held under a microscope. :)
Date: 9/16/2008 2:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 160    It's not a problem Cathy... Have a wonderful week.
