Drunk Driver

Now I understand this topic might be sensitive to some. Sorry if it may bring bad memories.

.........................

I don't like to think it, but I feel a couple of days ago, I "let" a drunk get on his motorbike and drive home.

This "drunk" is actually a collegue. He is a cook in the bar/restaurant I work at, he was off shift, and was enjoying a pint of beer, like most cooks do after their shift, I know there is nothing more better than a refreshing beer to cool down after a what, 12 hour shift. It's quite normal for the cooks to stay back a half hour, just to chit chat and have "A" beer and then head home.

This cook, had drunk two and a half jugs, which is bassicaly 7 pints.

By the time he had finished his first jug, and my collegue was pouring him a fresh glass from jug number 2, I approached my college and just stated, didn't he already drink a full jug alone, isn't that too much. Because I know he has about a 2 hour journey to go home (he has to cross the border).

"Naw, we people can drink" - says my collegue, who is of the same race, somewhat proud to say that for some reason that THEY are able to hold their liquor down better.

Because I'm not close to either of them, I sort of just drifted away from that.

Comes closing, he is sharing another jug, with another cook who just got off shift. It is clear that he is different. Overly happy (drunks always are so), hyper, loud, obnoxious. And AGAIN, I told him, the collegues around and the manager included, He is drunk, he should not be drinking anymore, yet alone be driving home.

But No.... I was the party-pooper. They told me to chill, and just forget about, like they didn't want the responsible response, they just wanted to watch this guy blast himself.

I went home shortly, and didn't think about it.

Today, I saw the kitchen schedule, he is on medical leave. Hmmm, I asked around, turns out he crashed on his way home that night. I was frustrated at myself, for not pushing further on, and even more so frustrated with the others for letting him continue, and letting him drive home.

Maybe it's not nice to say, but luckily it's only HIM who is injured, I'm glad he didn't injure anyone else.

You know, I should pity this guy, he spend 3-4 hours just to go to and from work, he slaves in a hot kitchen all day, to support his wife and 2 kids, just to be so irresponsible.

It is a sad case, that he will most likely be sacked. but served him right, I have no pity for drunks.

let alone, drunks who think they should be driving.

To add to this, today the kitchen manager (who was off on that evening) was questioning everyone, and telling the bartender off, as to why we continued serving him beer. and I can't help but to feel partly responsible.

it's a sad thing, but again i will say it, i have no pity for drunk drivers!

Date: 8/27/2008 12:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 998    I think you did an awesome job in saying what was on your mind .. not just once, but twice. You were very vocal about the situation, and I don't know what else you could have done besides call the police before he got on his bike. Just in case the people who were more friendly and knew him better didn't know, you made sure to bring it to their consciousness that he was past the limit for drinking. You did much more than most people would have had the courage to say. The drunk guy lost so much last night. He more than likely got a situation, which is really horrible in the states these days. He probably totalled his bike, not to mention the injuries he sustained. And what will his wife and kids do till he gets back working again. I'll bet he didn't think of all he would be loosing when he chugged that extra beer. Sad :(
Date: 8/27/2008 12:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 998    You might get some irate responses to this post, but then this is a very emotional topic. Especially since I had an uncle that was thrown through the windshield of his VW Bug, and killed due to a drunk driver. Also, we lost a dear friend in Wayne/Crash .. due to a drunk driver *sniff*. :(
Date: 8/27/2008 12:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 30747    You did all you could and, if anything, it should have been the bartender to stop him from driving. Unfortunately some people just don't listen or learn. This is just one of those things I can't comprehend the "other" side of. It's beyond me why people take that kind of chance.
Date: 8/27/2008 1:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 64637    I lost a dear friend to a drunk driver in 02', I have no pity for these selfish people, They don't care about anyone else but themselves. You did the right thing, but I would have called the Police before he even got on his bike. He should have been fired too, and the guy who kept serving him, knowing he had to drive should have been canned too...and a motorcycle, what an idiot. I am a medic, and have seen some gruesome things, that has to be one of the worst! Oh, this is a touchy subject, but at least you said something. Yeah, I'm glad that he was the only one who got hurt- and not some innocent little kid or something...goes back to the saying "you reap what you sow"~~~~~~~~MidnightSun
Date: 8/27/2008 1:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 37843    It's hard to convince someone to have some common sense when you're out numbered like you were, but you did try, and maybe next time the guy will listen. Don't beat yourself up over it, you tried.
Date: 8/27/2008 1:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 49037    Don't beat yourself up over it, I think you did all you could. He is an adult, and like Ginger said, you tried twice, and that was more than what most people would have done. It's a shame this happened, but I'm glad that he didn't hurt any innocent people.
Date: 8/27/2008 2:02:00 PM  From Authorid: 12072    I agree with the others, don't blame yourself or beat yourself up. You did speak up, which like Ginger said, is a lot more than most people would do. Sometimes we have to learn for ourselves, which is hopefully what this guy (and his colleagues!) did.
Date: 8/27/2008 4:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    You did your best to prevent him from driving hun, the manager and his co-workers who drank with him should assume a lot of the responsibility for allowing him to drive. It disgusts me when I read of stories like this when people will not learn to do the right thing. Get a lift home or only drink at home. Far too many innocent people have died because of people like your co-worker's selfish act of drinking and driving.
Date: 8/27/2008 5:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 14754    i have a coworker that a month ago was fighting for her life, a drunk driver hit her a block from her home..head on...she is doing much better and probably will began to start walking again in 2 months...she is now out of ICU. she has a long haul, but she is lucky..
Date: 8/28/2008 6:28:00 PM  From Authorid: 21839    you would have been labeled the bad guy, if you stopped him from going home, they would have never known you saved his life & would have been the bad guy... People who drink don't listen & most of them think they are invincible... the guy that killed Crash, supposedly, had his keys taken away & somehow got them back.. I don't know if that is correct, but if I am taking the keys of someone who is to drunk to drive, they would not find them till the next day.. if only someone would have done that, my brother & many others would still be here... I commend you for doing the right thing, most people don't...
Date: 8/28/2008 7:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 64123    I doubt you could have stopped him, don't blame yourself. And he deserves no pity. His wife and children, nevermind basic common sense should have kept him from driving home. I have no compassion for drunk drivers, thankfully it was only himself he hurt.
