Did Garth Brooks Ruin Country Music`Psyguy

Waylon Jennings once said "Garth Brooks ruined country music"...the g-rated version of his saying.

I mean think about it, before Garth Came along, there was no chance that any country music star had a chance to fill a Stadium Arena, and play to 20,000-100,000 plus night after night.

Most stars just played guitar, and didn't move across the stage, and jump into the crowd, they just crooned out their songs, standing in the same spot.

Garth brought the big productions to his show, flying with strings, running into the crowd, running all over the place, and brought more than a show to the fans.

That angered Waylon, and many traditionalists who believed that the songs should bring the crowd to the shows.

Waylon didn't need no big production, no glitter or gimicks, he just played and sang songs from his heart. He stripped down his music, and brought Texas, and honky-tonk living to the masses.

But despite all of Garth's Success, he kept the price of tickets to $25/person.

I know many look at his retirement fiasco, but once you got Music in your blood, it's hard to get rid of it. It's a drug, and addicting.

He recently played 9 nights in Oklahoma, those tickets were at $25, and I read his voice never gave out.

He felt bad when he charged $50 for the California shows in California, but it was all going to charity.

His Ultimate Hits cd did not sell on Itunes, for 33 songs, it would of cost a consumer $33 to get the whole cd....He sold it for $16 at local stores.

His "More than a memory" became the first song to debut #1 on the country charts

He also passed Elvis as the best selling solo artist, and only trails the Beatles in cd sales.

Date: 7/5/2008 10:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 30093    I agree with Waylon that gimmickry isn't what music is about... but ruining a music genre? Hardly. I imagine the people who attend Brooks' shows for the flashiness weren't exactly in it for the music to begin with. If anything, he probably introduced a lot of people to the genre.
Date: 7/5/2008 10:42:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63026    I do too. I think It's sort of Ironic that Waylon, would speak out against it. He's the one who allowed Garth to do what he did. But Garth did do alot for country. Like Big and Rich did back in 2004. They were different, and brought new fans to the genre.
Date: 7/6/2008 1:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 26303    Sounds like sour grapes to me. I never knew about Garth's tickets, I think, more power to him. That's fantastic. The price of concert tickets is just plane wicked, imho.
Date: 7/6/2008 1:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 26303    oops, plain*
Date: 7/6/2008 1:16:00 AM  From Authorid: 42945    He made me a bit more interested in country music...I rarely ever listened to country much and I think he is good...sounds like Waylon is maybe jealous???
Date: 7/6/2008 3:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 45630    I think country musicians killed country music. Let's face it. If people want to keep it the same old same old then you will find the songs are about your pickup breaking down, your wife leaving and your dog dying. No variety. All music needs to change!
Date: 7/6/2008 6:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 15228    Country does have a lot of variety, more so after Garth came along, so I think he helped it. I never listened to country until I saw a Garth Brooks tv special, which led me to Brooks and Dunn and so on.
Date: 7/6/2008 6:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 10245    I think country would probably have died a long time ago with out the new blood that was brought in ;o)
Date: 7/6/2008 6:59:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63026    I don't think Waylon was jealous. Waylon put the fear of god in people. He will always be a true legend. I think Waylon was more upset about the way he did his shows, and how it was more pop sounding.
Date: 7/6/2008 7:03:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63026    I agree it does need to change. But the thing about country music is, they honor their hero's. Country music has the Grand Ole Opry, and Iconic Places, unlike other genres. Some say to be a true country star you got to know the history starting will the Carter Family, And Jimmy Rodgers, and how Roy Acuff, and Ernest Tubb, shaped their generations.
Date: 7/6/2008 8:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 21839    all music changes with times, if you don't like certain changes to the music, then don't listen to it... nothing stays the same, some for the good some for the bad, alot of it is phases that will go away...
Date: 7/6/2008 9:10:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 63026    country music has gone through phases from applachin music, to honkytonk music, the nashville sound, to country rock and roll, to pop, to urban cowboy, to traditional, back to pop, back to traditonal, now it's tilting back to country rock, and pop.
Date: 7/6/2008 10:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 36901    I agree with Mercury.
Date: 7/6/2008 2:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 19625    Garth Brooks would have sold out regardless of his antics, the man has talent. If it was all for the flash, his Albums wouldn't do as well as they do. And you cannot "ruin" country music, darnit, although Sugarland is trying their very best to do so. Garth Brooks simply updated country music, which is a feat. He brought it to where it is. And some of his stuff may border pop music, but certianly none of it could be labled "pop" Garth Brooks helped solidify the line between "Country" and "Country-Western" because Yes, there is a difference. Erin-
Date: 7/7/2008 3:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 64498    No I dont think that he ruined it although I under stand what Waylon is saying but music is constantly growing and changing like a baby to a child to an adult we may not like the change but we know deep down it is something that will happen and love it anyway!
Date: 7/12/2008 12:18:00 AM  From Authorid: 4309    Garth Brooks doesnt even like country music hahahahaha. Before he ever did it he failed miserably at trying to be in a quite different music genre and most of the crap out there nowadays pretending to be country isn't even country anyway.
Date: 7/17/2008 8:21:00 AM  From Authorid: 4144    i've never been a garth fan but i have to say good for him for keeping his ticket prices and cds low. that gives the average joe a chance to see a concert. waylon needs to worry about waylon and let garth worry about garth.
