1. a deviation from the normal or common order or form or rule: "Saboor ran his fingers over the neck of the guitar, searching for any anomalies in the wood surface."

2. someone who is unusual, abnormal, or difficult to classify: "I was somewhat of an anomaly among my friends as an employed 'dotcommer', but I wasn't sure if it meant that I was real survivor, or if it was just a matter of time before I had to move on."

3. (as in astronomy) position of a planet as defined by its angular distance from its perihelion, as seen from the sun

adjective forms: anomalistic, anomalistical adverb form: anomalistically

ORIGIN: Approximately 1571; borrowed from Latin, 'anomalia'; from Greek, 'anomalia,' from 'anomalos': anomalous ('an': not + 'homalos': even, probably from 'homos': same).
