My family and I moved into my home when I was six years old. I was very happy there. I never saw or heard a poltergeist in my home except for the ones my vivid imagination created in the closet and under the bed. The years went by and I started to become a young adult. When I started to go through puberty things began to happen. Late at night I would hear noises in the house. We lived in a old two story home. The stairs had a certain sound when someone walked up them and another sound when the house settled. Every night I could hear the stairs creak as someone or something walked up them. I could hear footsteps coming down the hall and stopping outside my bedroom door. I would lie in bed stiff with fear waiting for the door to open and something to come in. After a few moments I could hear the sound of someone turning around in the carpet and going back down the hall and down the stairs. I would then hear the sound of someone rummaging around in the kitchen cabinets (my bedroom was directly above the kitchen). I would get up and go to the top of the stairs and listen. I could hear someone moving around the entire first floor of the house moving things. I would also hear the sound of my front door being unlocked and opened. I never heard anyone leaving. The storm door was never opened. I would go downstairs and look around. Nothing had been touched but the door was always open. For years this went on. Finally, one day I mentioned hearing noises in our home to my father and my older brother. My brother, who could sleep through anything, didn't believe me. My father, however, had also heard sounds of footsteps in the hall. My bedroom door and my parent's bedroom door were directly across from one another. My father said he always had felt that whatever was in the hall was staring at his door. I discovered that he had started keeping a gun in his room at night for protection but since nothing enetered our rooms he didn't feel very threatened. Things changed when I was 16. The noisy guest left and something evil took its place. Every night I was awoke with the feel of cold hands closing around my throat. I would sleep with my own hands around my throat to try to ward off the feeling. Nothing worked. The room would get very cold when I had the feeling and would warm after the feeling passed. This went on for months. I was the only one affected. When the ordeal with 'hands' was over our noisy friend returned. I have been told by several people that poltergeists are attracted to girls going through puberty. Maybe that's why it never bothered my brother. My father and I were not the only ones to hear the noises. I had many friends and family hear them also. I have since moved from that house after my parents divorce. When the home was for sale my father feared a prospective buyer would hear our noisy friend and not buy the home. I guess it left when I did. I have never heard it again.
